Star 9 Divine Ingredient Purity & Transparency

My Sheiks & Shebas!

At Star 9 Divine we take your skin very seriously, and we’ll always do everything we can to let you know exactly “What’s in That?

Everything under the sun is a “chemical”… including the water we drink and the air we breathe!

At Star 9 Divine Beauty & Bath we do everything possible to avoid harmful chemicals found in many commercial products. We work and study and test in order to create Authentic & True Artisanal™ formulations with very carefully chosen ingredients that are as close to their natural state as possible. Every ingredient is thoroughly researched, and we engage in on-going skin care education.

In 2018 we removed Lard from some of our soap recipes so that you have a wider choice, and removed Palm Oil from all of our products. Some of our best old-timey lard soaps are still available for those who truly love them, and you can always request a custom batch!  Because of the largely unsustainable nature of Palm Oil, and its harm to the environment and living things, it will not appear in any of our future products.

Here are a few details about some of the substances we avoid, along with some good news…

Harmful synthetic surfactants are widely used in many commercial products to increase bubbles and foam. Sulfates are a potential skin irritant at levels above 1%, and yet many commercial manufacturers add them at up to 20% in their products.

Star 9 Divine products do not contain sulfates such as SLS or SLES. Instead we use Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) in our bath bombs, and Sodium Coco-Sulfate (sodium salt of the sulfate ester of coconut alcohol) in other products. Both are rated very low on the scale of irritants at EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.

These compounds are widely used by commercial manufacturers to extend the shelf life of personal care products to years. International regulations have approved parabens as safe, but the idea that they act as endocrine disruptors has taken hold among consumers, and that idea has been difficult to reverse. The idea that a paraben can act as an estrogen has been widely disproven, yet the desire of our clients for products without parabens is very important to us, and so we do not use them in any of our lines.

Phthalates are found in most commercial cleaners, fragrances, and cosmetics. The CDC became concerned about the phthalates we are exposed to as consumers, which prompted many studies confirming those fears. A House Bill in 2008 banned these chemicals from children’s products, and more regulation may come from a report by the Chronic Hazard Advisory Panel (CHAP) on Phthalates. Because phthalates are linked to asthma, ADD, ADHD, breast cancer, obesity, type II diabetes, low IQ, autism, developmental and behavioral issues, altered reproductive development, and male fertility issues, Star 9 Divine will not use ingredients that contain them.

A “genetically modified organism” is a plant or other living thing that has been altered on a genetic level. FDA research concluded there is no evidence that GMO ingredients are harmful or dangerous for humans, and GMOs are used in a very wide variety of commercial cosmetics and body care products. Because many of our clients have joined us in our concerns about the lack of transparency in the creation of GMOs, we do not use them.

The U.S. government and the World Health Organization have classified formaldehyde as a carcinogen, a potent skin sensitizer, and an allergen, especially when inhaled. According to the FDA, while many commercial manufacturers do not directly add it, most cosmetics contain a substance that generates formaldehyde through an on-going chemical process right there in the jar. It’s difficult to know which commercial products to avoid, since all of these can indicate that formaldehyde is present: DMDM hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl urea, Diazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, Bronopol, Hydroxymethylglycinate (and many more). The cancer risk of a cosmetic might be slight, but taken together with exposure to pressed wood products like flooring, cigarette smoke, vehicle exhaust, gas/wood stoves and kerosene heaters, lifetime exposure to formaldehyde can add up!

One can hardly pick up a commercial skin care product these days without seeing “Dimethicone” on the label. Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer used for smoothing, coating, and filling. The FDA has approved Dimethicone for use in skin care products. The main issue is that silicones cover and trap the skin - preventing it from breathing, and interfering with natural processes like sweating and body temperature regulation, as well as the natural sloughing off of dead skin cells. Silicones exacerbate and increase acne breakouts. Our skin does not need silicone in order to look and feel lovely! Silicones are also not biodegradable, and we refuse to use them.

Good News about PEGs!
Polyethylene Glycols, while scary sounding, are non-toxic... they are used as thickeners and to hold moisture in a product. The issue with PEGs in the past was that they were often contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane (a carcinogen). For a product to be certified organic, it could not contain those by-products. In the past many manufacturers didn’t care to take the extra step required to remove them.

The good news is that today most manufacturers have revised their processes! Ethylene oxide and 1,4 Dioxane usually appear at very low levels in most products. Remember, a chemical is not bad just for being present, it is the level at which it is present that is the issue. 2-8 parts per million is common now, and very acceptable. Even California (the strictest standard in the US) has this allowable level for PEGs.

We still don’t add PEGs directly, and none of our ingredients currently contain PEGs, but it is nice to know that this thickener and moisturizer is not as harmful as it once was!

Purity and transparency

This is so informative! Thanks! I can see that you put a lot of thought into how you make your soaps. Love all the good ingredients and am glad it doesn’t have the bad ones. (Pat Coats Jacobsen, 2/2018)
